Based on the quality of songs on each record1: Continuum- His masterpiece hands down. Half of these songs, notably Slow Dancing, Stop This Train, Gravity, In Repair, and Dreaming With a Broken Heart all make strong arguments for being the best song he's ever made. Personally I would've liked another original song rather than the Bold as Love cover, but other than that this is undeniably his strongest body of work.2: The Search For Everything: The best and most mature lyrics John has ever written, and musically it encompasses all the genres/styles he's down through his career.
You're Gonna Live Forever In Me, Rosie, In The Blood, and Still Feel Like Your Man are the outliers. The title track for me was underwhelming in my opinion, and I feel like the country-vibe songs were a little better on Born and Raised3: Room For Squares: The production and guitar-playing is minimal, but it's John's songwriting itself that really shines. No Such Thing, Why Georgia, and Neon are classics, while St. Patrick's Day and 83 are some of his best storytelling songs.4: Battle Studies: Edge of Desire, War of My Life, and Half of My Heart are the outliers here. The Crossroads cover was okay.5: Born and Raised: A VERY close 5th, and his most underrated album.
The title track, Walt Grace, and Whiskey, Whisky, Whiskey can compete with any song on Continuum.6: Heavier Things: Come Back to Bed, Clarity, and (yes) Daughters are top-tier, but as a whole this was his transition album away from RFS into Continuum, not a bad album whatsoever7: Paradise Valley: Dear Marie, Wildfire, Waiting on the Day, and Paper Doll (the first four tracks) are lyrically and musically great, but this album didn't really do much for me after that. Also I hate Call Me the Breeze I don't care what you say. Also Try! Would go below Born and RaisedAnd Where The Light is would be a close 3rd under SFEThe complete list:1. Search For Everything3. Where the Light Is (Live)4. Room For Squares5.
Battle Studies6. Born and Raised7. Heavier Things9.
Paradise Valley. I don't like how many fans say that Continuum is and forever will be his best work.
If that would really be the case, what could possibly motivate him to write new songs. That being sad, I am not hating on that album at all. Mayer once said in an interview that Continuum was about writing the best songs he could possibly write on one idea, and that is what makes it so great. The album has a flow to it that is very interesting to listen to. Still, I would say that TSFE has more groove and the lyrics are just as mature or however you want to call it as Continuum. I personally just enjoy the songs more. Also I think that John is not and never will be comparable to any Pop artist, his records are there for you when you need them, thats why I feel a very strong connection to B&R and PV. I get that people don't like them as much, those songs aren't everdaysongs.
But there are times when you really get those songs and resonate to them. Here is my ranking:. TSFE. B&R. Continuum.
Paradise Valley. Battle Studies. Room for Squares. Heavier ThingsI would actually say that it's super hard to rank them, just because I really love them all. If you would compare this ranking to the olympia, the 7. Place would still get the silver medal!. Admittedly my rankings are based on what songs I emotionally connect to as a listener.
I'm not a musician nor do I consider myself a music aficionado so I don't think of myself as an expert on the objective quality, but my two cents:1.) Battle Studies - I just absolutely love every single song on this album. I think Edge of Desire is one of his best songs and while it may be the only extreme standout, there is not one song I ever skip while listening, and I have listened a lot.2.) Continuum - This album has the most classic songs on it. Heart of Life is top 5 favorite JM songs for me. The only thing that ticks it down past Battle Studies is Waiting On The World To Change - if I never heard that song again I wouldn't mind.3.) Born & Raised - Walt Grace, Whiskey, and Born and Raised are classics.
John Mayer Discography Mega Hits
Queen of California is a feel good tune. Face to Call Home is one of my understated favorites.4.) Heavier Things - I'm ranking this ahead of the others mostly because it has my favorite JM song of all time, Split Screen Sadness. If you can listen to that song without your heartbreaking a little, you've never been in love. Come Back to Bed is also severely underrated. The rest of the songs I have generally positive feelings about, I don't love any of them but I also don't dislike them.5.) Paradise Valley - I've noticed this is generally the consensus least favorite album amongst fans but I really liked it.
Wildfire with Frank Ocean is simple and beautiful. Waitin' On The Day would've made Born And Raised even more of a classic album if he'd put it on there instead. I like Wildfire for the same reason I like Queen of California. You're No One Til Someone Let's You Down I relate to on a spiritual level, and Badge and Gun is one I like but just can't explain why.6.) Room For Squares - Last simply because I skip the most songs on this album when I listen. Why Georgia is an obvious classic, as is Neon. Really love My Stupid Mouth. Really hate Your Body Is a Wonderland and No Such Thing. Can't rank The Search For Everything just yet.
I need to live with it for a while. I know I don't like Helpless and think Love On The Weekend is one of his worst songs ever though.edited for spacing and because I can't count. I can't get over how much B&R has had an impact on me. Every time I listen to the title track I tear up because it's so honest.
B&R was also completely left field from what he done in the past. I dove into John Mayer's discography when 'Battle Studies' came out and Continuum was the first album that I consumed instantly. When B&R came out, I was immediately disappointed by the product. It took about a year for me to go, 'Okay, I get it!' Five years later and I'm still continuously falling more in love with B&R. Born & Raised.
Continuum. Room for Squares.
Battle Studies. The Search for Everything.
Paradise Valley. Heavier Things.
